Vygotsky was virtually unknown in the Western world until the first translations of his writings appeared in English (e.g., Vygotsky, 1961, 1962, 1963).
He then quickly gained recognition as an original thinker whose views were important for psychology and education. His so-called cultural-historical theory was influential in the creation of the new field of cultural psychology.
